This is there Lincoln screwed up with the new Continental. When I think “luxury” this is the first thing to come to mind. 6.75L V12 making 435hp. 5620lbs of excess. Two doors that open backwards. A hood longer than the extent of the US national deficit. A blunt face with a hood ornament that says “Get out of my way or I will run you over and have you assassinated in the hospital”. And just look at this interior.

Kinja'd!!!

Wood. Real wood. Leather everywhere. Brushed metal. No stupid infotainment displays. Elegance. This is what America needed from Lincoln. A truly world-class luxury car that gives no shits about economy, or handling, or speed. Just a wasteful, large car that is priced at a point that punches way above its weight class, much in the way the Corvette does in the world of supercars. Lincoln needed to make the modern version of this:

Kinja'd!!!

And instead we get, essentially, a modern version of this:

I just can’t like the new Rolls looks or attitude. The Wraith I like. The rest of the range, you can keep.

To me, the should change the name to Dollars for the Sake of Dollars.

I mean, surely you didn’t actually expect Ford to make something remarkable?

When defining luxury, I try to look at it from a passenger’s perspective. Not the passenger of a roller-coaster ride, but more like the passenger of a mobile living room. This is how automotive luxury was defined just a few short decades ago.

The car must limit its intrusiveness on the passenger by offering things like a smooth ride and sound deadening. It must also be comfortable, so comfy seats and a spacious interior are a must. Convenience features are an important factor too; no window cranks! And last but not least: style. The car has to look good both inside and out.

I had hopes. Right now the closest America has to opulent wasteful luxury is the Cadillac Escalade.

I gotta admit, infotainment screens ruin cars for me. I've yet to own a car with one.

The Vette can get away with ‘punching above it’s weight class’ because a lot of the things that make a sports car good can also be cost effective. The same simply cannot be said for a bespoke interior full of premium materials that are carefully assembled by hand. Building a car that way with those things in it will never be cheap. There’s no way for Ford to build us a RR-Quality lincoln without charging RR-level prices for it.

If Ford did that they would have to charge $200,000. And people bitch now that they are too expensive. Who the fuck is gonna buy a $200,000 Lincoln?

I’m going to apologize ahead of time because this will sound harsh, feel free to stop reading here if easily offended.

If you thought Lincoln was going to build a 2 door Continental to try and replicate the styling of the oversized late 60s/early 70s 2 door Continental coupe instead of trying to go the direction of the mid 60's iconic Continental sedan that everyone (and I mean everyone) likes better than the coupe you posted you’re fucking insane.

Sorry, it had to be said. I don’t care if people like the new continental or not, it’s powerful, it’ll be luxurious and comfortable as hell and people will actually buy it. The 2 door Rolls up there would not sell as a Lincoln and if you think it would sell the above comment of - you’re fucking insane - still applies.

Not saying they should, saying they should have gone more in that direction of luxury instead of where they ended which is Buick luxury.

Most people don’t seem to understand Lincoln’s positioning.

Lincoln has no interest in being Caddy or BMW. They would rather be Infiniti or Lexus

They don’t want performance luxury, if they did they would all be RWD based platforms like Caddy, BMW, Audi(for the most part), etc.

They want quiet luxury. How many buyers would rather have luxury than a trackable car? Well, I’d bet almost ALL of Lincoln’s customers or potential customers.

Maybe Buick falls in that category, maybe thats where GM wants Buick to fit. That’s fine if it is, but it’s in no way an insult. Lincoln made a beautiful car, which is most likely going to start in the 40k price range that’s luxurious as hell. Oh, and it’s got a HELL of a motor for when you do need/want it. People have been SO judgemental of a car most haven’t seen in person. Jalopnik even did a whole right up about how “it’s got cool handles but because it’s a Lincoln it probably sucks” Complete BS.

If I were shopping in that price range, I’d want a bit of stealth. Don’t want my car attacked when the revolution comes. I’d go S63 or Continental Flying Spur.

They also want something that is reliable and reasonably priced - the car services here will order anywhere from 20 to a couple hundred. Lincoln will probaby sell a significant portion of the production run here in the Tri-State area. The last Town Car was dumb technology - very reliable, and that’s why CarMel, Dial 7, and the smaller services like them. Sometimes my contract jobs come with a Town Car ride home - I’d rather have that than a meal credit.

I don’t think they screwed up the new Continental per se.

It’s hugely better than the MKS it replaces.

The real issue is that it falls short of the true flagship model the Lincoln brand needs.

The biggest problem I see with it is that it doesn’t look clearly better than the Hyundai Equus/Genesis G90.

I sat in a Hyundai Equus last year... It’s very VERY nice... and my first thought was “Lincoln needs a car that is at least as good as this”

“Lincoln has no interest in being Caddy or BMW. They would rather be Infiniti or Lexus”

The new Continental is not anywhere close to the level of the the top end Lexus LS.

Hell... I’m not even sure if it’s at the level of the Hyundai Equus/Genesis G90.

And that the main problem.

I’d love to hear why you don’t think it’s at those levels. Please explain.

Have you seen a Genesis in person? Body gaps were better on Lincoln’s a decade ago

Rolls-Royce does compete in at least one full market segment above Lincoln, other than maybe the original 1940 Continental, there’s never been anything with the Lincoln badge targeted that high. The mid-50s Mark II was, but that wasn’t a Lincoln.

The Hyundai Equus/Genesis G90 is a much nicer car than the Genesis you’re thinking of. I saw and sat in one last year.

But honestly... I hope you’re right and I’m wrong.

The autoshow is going to be in Toronto next month where I’ll get to compare them back to back...

Well let me know when you see it next month. Maybe they have stepped their game up.

I know the one I saw in person was brutal. My 07 Mercury was put together better.
